Two pupils from St Anne’s Primary School in Derry have picked up top prizes in a prestigious schools competition.
Caoimhe O’Kane (primary five) and Emma McDaid (special needs) won awards in the Northern Ireland Water’s seventh annual schools competition to design promotional posters on the theme “Stop Internal Flooding.”
The competition was held to raise awareness of the dangers of flushing inappropriate items down the toilet or pouring cooking fat down the sink.
Co Derry pupils Francis O’Connell, St. Columba’s PS, Kilrea (primary five), Niamh Martin, St. Trea’s PS, Magherafelt (primary six) and Ellie-Rose Cassidy, St. Trea’s PS, Magherafelt (primary seven) also won awards.
In addition to designing a poster, each entrant was required to answer five multiple-choice questions on water related issues.
The winning posters will also be used in a campaign to illustrate the effects of flushing inappropriate items down the toilet or blocking drains.
The awards were presented at a ceremony at the NI Water Wastewater Heritage Centre in Belfast.
