Derry school teacher Gary Murray put in an outstanding performance to win the City of Derry Buncrana 5K, sponsored by Furey Insurance, run in the Donegal seaside town last night.
Murray, a teacher at St Joseph’s Boys in Creggan and who runs for St Malachy’s AC, broke the tape in 14.35.26 to see off the challenge of more than 200 competitors.
Murray, who clocked 30:54 for 10,000m at the recent Highgate Harriers “Night of Personal Bests,” was a mere one second away from the current Irish course record of 14:35, held by Ciaran Doherty.
Current AAI National Masters cross country champion and Dublin 10,000 metre champion, Declan Reed (City of Derry AC), came second in 14:47.94.
Finn Valley AC’s Barry Harron took third spot in 15:16.80.
Another Finn Valley AC athlete, and one of the pre-race favourites, Theresa McGloin, won the women’s race in 16:17.70 with the in-form Natasha Adams (Lifford AC) second in 16:35.02.
Northern Ireland and Ulster Novice cross country champion, Sarah Lindsay, of Foyle Valley AC in Derry, came third in 18:54.79.
