Roddy Collins Jr has followed in his father’s footsteps and left Derry City.
The 19-year-old right back was released from his contract at Brandywell following the Candystripes 5-2 defeat by St Patrick’s Athletic last night in which he was an unused substitute.
The defender was Roddy Collins Snr’s first signing when he took over the managerial reins at Brandywell in November last following the departure of Declan Devine.
However, after making 13 appearances for the club he was promptly dropped to the bench by new manager Peter Hutton, who started him only once – in last Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat by Dundalk in the EA Sports Cup.
Derry confirmed his departure in a statement on the club’s official website.
It said: “We can announce this evening that Roddy Collins Junior has left the club.”
The statement added: “We would like to thank Roddy for his service and wish him all the best in his career in the future.”
Collins Jnr started his career as part of his father’s 2011 Monaghan United squad.
However, he was one of the players left without a club when Monaghan withdrew from the league citing financial pressures in 2012.
In January 2013, he returned to League football, again joining his father at Athlone Town where he went on to play 25 league games out of 28 as Athlone won the First Division title and promotion to the Premier Division.
At the end of that season he moved to Derry City, once again following his father.
