Staff and management at the firebombed Everglades Hotel in Derry have been commended for their “brilliance of resilience” by local MP Mark Durkan.
Staff have been praised for evacuating over 50 guests from the Waterside hotel after a masked man placed a device on the hotel’s reception desk at 11.15pm on Thursday night last.
The device exploded at 2.00am as it was being examined by British army bomb disposal experts, extensively damaging the lobby of the hotel.
Staff and contractors worked throughout Friday night to have the hotel backin business by Saturday afternoon.
Mr Durkan, the SDLP MP for Foyle, was speaking after visiting the hotel to commend staff and management.
Mr Durkan said: “Staff and management at The Everglades deserve every commendation for getting themselves back to business so quickly.
“Along with their construction responders they have improvised well to literally bypass the destruction and damage caused by the wreckers.
“Their positive working spirit demonstrates the brilliance of resilience – and will continue to impress guests in spite of the temporary constraints with which they have to work.
“I heard from managers how proud they are of their staff and how appreciative they all are for the support and cooperation of others.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “Sir William Hastings also shared with me just how impressed he was with the response by the management and staff – and the ready goodwill and urgent purpose from others helping to get The Everglades guest-ready again so quickly.”
