A petrol bomb attack on the home of a Derry family while they slept could have had fatal consequences, Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion has said.
Cllr McCallion was speaking after four people, including two young children, escaped injury when a petrol bomb was thrown at a house in Fergleen Mews in the Galliagh area at about 2.00am yesterday.
Police said the device caused scorch damage to the front door.
Two adults and two very young children were in the house at the time and police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the attack to contact them.
Cllr McCallion she was relieved no one was injured the attack.
She said: “The house contained two adults and two children and anyone who uses petrol to attack a home in the middle of the night when families are in bed need to realise there is a possibility of fatalities.
“The people who carried out this attack need to understand that the entire community is sickened by it and will offer their support and help to the family involved.
“I would appeal to anyone who has information on this attack to bring it forward to the PSNI immediately.”
