Roads Services are being lobbied by Sinn Féin Councillor Maolíosa McHugh to intall a “no left turn” sign on the approach road to the Asda roundabout from the town side in an effort to minimise the potential for traffic collisions with motorists emerging from the slip lane onto the new bridge.
Cllr McHugh said he, and other party members, had received a “steady stream” of complaints about the continuing practice of some motorists not using the existing slip lane to exit from the town side onto the new bridge but instead driving up onto the Asda roundabout itself and then taking a left turn thus creating severe hazards for the motorists emerging from the slip lane.
He added: “There has been a number of accidents and many near misses because motorists emerging from the slip lane are not only having to observe the hectic traffic flow coming around the roundabout itself and are then being suddenly confronted with a vehicle incorrectly exiting left from the town side onto the new bridge lane and this is presenting a major hazard which is putting lives at risk given that they have little or no time to respond.
“I have been in contact with Roads Service and they have acknowledged that this problem exists and have committed to assess my request for a ‘No Left Turn’ sign to be installed beside the approach lane from the town exiting onto the roundabout.”
Cllr McHugh concluded: “Hopefully, this measure would go a long way in minimizing the dangers that are currently being posed to motorists and their passengers.”
