The residents of two Derry streets have rejected proposals to have their street names displayed in Irish.
Members of Derry City Council’s Environmental Services Committee will this week hear residents on Greenhaw Road on the cityside and Blackthorn Manor in the Waterside don’t want bilingual signage.
Just over half of the 50% of Greenhaw householders who responded to a survey, said they were against the idea.
In Blackthorn Manor, 54% responded with 49% saying no to the proposal.
As both did not achieve the 66% consent required, the installation of bilingual signage will not take place.
However, bilingual signage is set to be put up on Southway, which links Lone Moor Road to Creggan, and McGill Court in Ballymagroarty.
There was 100% backing for the proposals from the 33% in Southway and the 60% who replied in the McGill Court.
Members of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee are expected to giver the go-ahead for bilingual street signage to go up in both areas when they meet this Thursday.
