Schools in Derry are being encouraged to put on money lessons this month to boost young people’s understanding of money management and personal finance.
Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan, who is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Financial Education for Young People, has long championed the cause in Westminster and is also campaigning for compulsory financial education in schools.
The move comes in advance of the return of “My Money Week” (9 to 15 June), run by financial education charity pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group), after a successful first year in Northern Ireland last year.
The Personal Finance Education Group is offering teachers in Derry and throughout Northern Ireland free online resources, advice and training to help plan their activities.
Mr Durkan it was vital the next generation be equipped with the understanding to be able to make informed financial decisions.
He said only through teaching young people about personal finance could we provide them with the knowledge they need in a “complex financial climate.”
Mr Durkan added: “I hope that through working together we will be able to help our young people better understand the difficult choices that they will need to make.”
