The decision by the Environment Minister Mark Durkan that 24 posts at his Department are to be decentralised to Derry has been welcomed by the city’s new Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson.

The posts, which include the chief planner, the DoE marine division and several positions from the private office of the Minister are to be relocated to Ebrington.

The announcement was made as part of a wider decision to relocate 70 other posts to Coleraine following the recent loss of DVA (Driver Vehicle Agency) jobs there.

Cllr Stevenson said the relocation of the posts to derry was a “positive development” for the city and a “step in the right direction” towards bringing jobs to the city.

She added: “I hope it will prompt other Ministers in other departments to follow the Environment Minister’s example and decentralize more jobs to the North West region so our local economy can start to benefit from having central government jobs here.”
