Confirmation from Roads Minister Minister Danny Kennedy that improvement works totalling £170,000 on Barrack Street in Strabane includes the provision of a “Safer Routes To School Scheme” for both Barrack Street and St Anne’s Primary Schools, has been welcomed by local Sinn Fein Cllr Jay McCauley.
Work on the £170,000 scheme is scheduled to begin next month.
The improvements will take place between the street’s junction at the Bowling Green and extend to its junction at Newtownkennedy Street and see it closed to through traffic and involves resurfacing footways and carriageways.
Welcoming confirmation of the works, Cllr McCauley said: “I have been lobbying Road’s Service for much needed footway and carriageway improvements along Barrack Street and in working alongside Michaela Boyle MLA, have been pressing DRD to also secure the necessary funding from DSD to provide a much needed Safer Routes to School Scheme to enhance the safety of the children who attend both primary school sites in the area.
“We therefore welcome official confirmation from the Minister and the detail of the improvement works scheme will will thankfully be undertaken over the summer months in an effort to minimalise the level of inconvenience and disruption.”
