Jimmy Carr has resigned from Derry City Council following allegations in a Sunday newspaper that he sent lewd messages on a council-owned tablet computer.
He has also resigned from the SDLP which had suspended him after the Sunday Life alleged he posted sexually explicit images of himself on the internet and printed a number of the images in question.
In his resignation letter, Mr Carr said: “In light of recent allegations I feel that I must concentrate on my health and my personal life in a private and non-confrontational arena.
“I am also mindful in this decision that Derry City Council should not be a focus in any allegations levied against me.”
Mr Carr failed to get elected on the new Derry City and Strabane District Council two weeks ago.
However, he was entitled to remain a member of Derry City Council until April next year when the new authority takes effect.
He failed to turn up at the last ever Derry council annual general meeting on Monday night last.
