The report from the Police Ombudsman into an arson attack on Sean Dolans GAA club in Derry in December 2011 which resulted in five PSNI officers being disciplined, has been welcomed by Sinn Cllr Kevin Campbell.
Speaking after the publication of the report, which found that the PSNI investigation into the incident “lacked leadership, direction and supervision,” the Creggan councillor said from the outset “we were clear that we believed this was malicious.”
He added: “That was supported within days after we raised concerns with senior police officers.
“This report from the Police Ombudsman has vindicated that position.”
Cllr Campbell said the reported highlighted the accountability measures that existed to hold the PSNI to account when policing fell short of the required standard.
He concluded: “I welcome this report and that the Ombudsman has recommended that appropriate action be taken to address it and to ensure it does not happen again.”
