The crew of the Derry “LondonDerry” Doire is having a “whale of a time” despite falling back a place into third spot on day four of race 14 in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race which will end in around 10 days in Derry.
The leading yachts are picking up extra speed from the Gulf Stream current from being further south.
Jamaica Get All Right, the most southerly yacht, is now leading the fleet, with Switzerland falling into second ahead of the Derry Clipper.
Derry skipper Sean McCarter revealed the crew was having a “whale of a time” but conceded was disappointed at slipping back into third place.
He said: “It’s been another pleasant day in the Gulf Stream.
“Although we haven’t been able to make as much progress north as we’d like, the ability to do four knots in the right direction with almost no wind is a rare luxury!
“For the most part we’ve had decent breeze and have been playing ‘cat and mouse’ with Switzerland.”
And he revealed, like a lot of the other boats, they Derry crew had spotted a “fair amount” of wildlife.
He added: There have been various whale sightings, dolphins of different shapes and sizes, some of OneDLL’s water-skiing seagulls and several Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish.
“We spotted the latter in a current line floating with Saragosso weed and what seemed to be an algal bloom.”
