Residents in the Rosemount district of Derry are being urged to be extra vigilant following a spate of burglaries in the area.
SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack was speaking after the latest Neighbourhood Safety meeting which heard of an increase in house break-ins and car theft.
Cllr Cusack said according to the PSNI the break-ins, being carried out by opportunists taking advantage of open doors, windows and unlocked vehicles, involved juveniles looking to get their hands on “quick cash” or cars for joyriding.
She added: “Police maintain that early reporting is imperative in order to catch these perpetrators as many are going equipped for crime.
“A five minute trip to the shop can be enough time to be taken advantage of and it seems many of these intruders simply do not care if you are in the house or not,” she said. “Lock your doors, especially PVC, and check your cars. Don’t be a victim of the mental anguish of such an attack.
