A former Bishop of Derry and Raphoe is to be the main speaker at a special Church of Ireland “Service of Divine Healing” to be held at the end of the month.
Archbishop Robin Eames, who was COI Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, will speak on “Inner Peace and Community Peace” in St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast on Monday, 30 June next at 8.00 p.m.
A COI spokesperson said the theme was “very relevant” because there was often tension in Northern Ireland at this time of year.
The spokesperson added Archbishop Eames was a “very suitable choice” as speaker because he had been involved in the work of peace and reconciliation since the early years of the Troubles.
The spokesperson added: “He is also a man who keeps control of himself in the most volatile situations.”
The service will be led by Brother David Jardine, Director of Divine Healing Ministries.
West Church Music Group, from Bangor, will provide the musical accompaniment.
The spokesperson said everyone was invited to attend.
Dr Eames was elected Bishop of the cross-border diocese of Derry and Raphoe on 9 May 1975, at the age of 38 – having visited Derry only once.
In a groundbreaking move, he invited his similarly young Catholic counterpart, Most Rev Dr Edward Daly, Bishop of Derry, to his consecration.
Eames was translated five years later, to the Diocese of Down and Dromore before becoming the the 103rd Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland in 1986, a post he held for 20 years until his retirement in 2006.
