The historic first meeting of the newly-formed Derry City and Strabane District Council will take place at 7.00pm tonight in Derry’s Guildhall.
The new local authority is made up of 40 councillors who were elected to seven district electoral areas last month.
Tonight’s agenda includes the selection of presiding and deputy presiding councillors (chairperson and deputy chairperson) as well similar posts for four committees – Governance and Strategic Planning, Resources and Finance, Service Transformation and Shadow Planning Partnership Panel Representative – to which councillors will also be appointed.
The “super council” will sit in “shadow form” along with Derry City Council and Strabane District Council until it comes into effect on 1 April next year.
The make-up of the new 40-seat “Super Council” is: Sinn Fein 16 seats, SDLP 10, DUP 8, Independents 4 and Ulster Unionists 2.
