The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire has regained second place on day five of race 14 from New York to Derry in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Skipper Sean McCarter took advantage of 30 knots of wind to reclaim second spot from Switzerland and close the gap on race leaders Jamaica Get All Right.
The move came after the winds strengthened dramatically following several days of frustratingly slow progress, spinnakers have been replaced with the Yankee 1 or 2 as the shift finally came through and boat speeds picked up.
Sean said: “What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, we were gliding along in flat calm waters with blue sky and a warm breeze.
“Today, we are smashing upwind in almost 30 knots of noticeably colder wind.
“We are making good progress but I’m worried we sacrificed too much coming north to get a better wind angle when we might have been better maxing out the current for another while.”
The first yachts are expected to arrive in Derry in ten days time.
