The suspicious object which sparked a major security alert in Derry this morning may have been thrown at a police vehicle overnight.
British army bomb disposal experts were called to deal with the device which was discovered shortly after 9.30am at the lower end of Eastway in the city.
A number of residents have been asked to leave their homes.
The alert has caused widespread disruption in the area sections of Eastway, Westland Avenue, Laburnum Terrace, Westland Street and Beechwood Avenue being sealed off by police.
Traffic diversions are in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
Those responsible have been condemned.
SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey said residents in the area, especially the elderly, were “extremely worried” by the incident.
Sinn Fein Cllr Eric McGinley also hit out at those responsible saying they were “not wanted” by the local community.
