Last night’s shooting of a teenager and the discovery of a pipe bomb in Derry have been described as “abhorrent” by the city’s Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson.
The 18-year-old was shot five times in the legs by masked men at a house in Rathlin Drive in the Creggan area at around 9.20pm.
The attack came hours after a “suspicious” device found at the bottom of Eastway leading to the estate was declared a viable pipe bomb by police.
The previous night, a pizza delivery van hijacked in the Glenowen area was set alight at Central Drive in Creggan.
It is believed it was torched in attempt to lure PSNI into the area and that the pipe bomb failed to explode when thrown at a police vehicle.
Mayor Stevenson said those responsible for the incidents carried “no mandate for violence.”
She said: “I condemn these incidents and the disruption and upset they have caused to the people of Creggan and beyond.
“The majority of people in this city will not tolerate this type of activity.
“We will not allow our city to be drawn back to the past when we have a new positive story to tell based on peace and prosperity.
“We will not be deterred by these people who continue to try to destroy the good work that is ongoing across our communities.
“Those who were involved in the abhorrent incidents of the past few days have no place in our society and I would appeal to anyone who has any information to contact the authorities immediately.”
Cllr Stevenson concluded: “We must work collectively to ensure the bad days of the past remain in our history and we are allowed to continue with our quest for a bright new future for our children and grandchildren.”
