Two of Derry’s most dedicated local charities COS (Circle of Support) for Autism Families and Something Special, a learning disability organisation, have been selected by the city’s newly appointed Mayor as the chosen charity organisations for her term in office.
Each year through a number of fundraising events including the Mayor’s Ball, the Mayor lends support to one of a number of local charities, and Cllr Brenda Stevenson has nominated two organisations which provide vital support for children and families within the local community.
“I selected both these charities because of the invaluable services they provide in helping young people and their families cope with the many challenges of living with learning disabilities,” she explained.
“The opportunities and support they offer those affected are fantastic and both organisations have a network of dedicated volunteers and staff who rely on the generosity of the public to continue their work.
“I hope to offer them whatever support and assistance I can throughout the year in increasing their profile and raising funds, and I would also urge the public to support the work of both organisations throughout the year.”
Something Special provides both educational and creative opportunities for children and young adults with special needs and learning disabilities, as well as organising a whole host of fun events throughout the year. The group is also piloting a social economy project in the form of a craft shop in Eglinton Village, featuring the creative work of the young members.
COS (Circle of Support) for Autism Families is a group run by local parents to support families of children diagnosed with or being assessed for ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder. The group also organises regular social outings and schemes for young people affected by the disorder.
