New proposed road safety legislation will save lives, a Derry MLA has said.
Calling for people to have their say on the proposals. Sinn Fein’s Raymond McCartney said he welcomed any new proposals which would save lives on the roads but it was important people had the opportunity to help shape the legislation.
He added: “Young road users are a group who are at particular risk and it is crucially important that we engage with them before introducing changes to legislation.
“We also need to have input from other road users and members of the public.
“The proposals will include a number of changes to many aspects of driving.
“Some of those proposals include a requirement for quad bike users to wear a helmet while on a public road, a new drink driving training and testing regime for learner drivers and restrictions on new drivers.
“I would encourage all organisations and individuals with an interest in road safety to have their say on this Bill.”
Mr McCartney concluded: “It’s important we make sure that any measures brought forward will make our roads a safer place for all in the future.”
