World-renowned a cappella supergroup The Swingle Singers have been announced as guest artists for October’s International Choral Festival being held in Derry in October next.
The Grammy award-winning British-based septet, best known for their jazz infused covers of classical favourites (by composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven) and pop music (including songs by Elbow, Florence and the Machine and The Beatles), will perform in the newly refurbished St. Columb’s Hall on Friday, 24 October.
The group will also lead a “Big Sing” workshop with all participating post-primary school choirs on the same day.
The group is looking forward to playing in Derry.
A spokesperson said: “It’s been too long since we last visited Northern Ireland, and we’re thrilled to be returning as part of this wonderful festival. We believe in the transformative power of singing, and we can’t wait to share our new music with an audience of vocal music enthusiasts who feel the same way.”
The festival has also announced the return of the City of Culture Musician-in-Residence Neil Cowley and his Trio who will perform on Thursday, 23 October as part of the festival line-up in a concert that will feature pieces from “Eighth Gate” (performed with local chamber choir Codetta), a work composed by the award-winning jazz pianist as a gift to the city of Derry in return for his inspirational time spent here in 2013.
Both acts join an incredible line-up of guest artists for the second edition of the International Festival, including the recently announced world-famed vocal ensemble The Sixteen, conducted by Harry Christophers.
Tickets go on sale for all evening concerts next month.
Details will be posted at www.codichoral.com, on Facebook (City of Derry International Choral Festival) and via Twitter (@codichoral).
Around 60 choirs (featuring over 2000 singers) from around the world are expected to take part in the festival with the main venue for concerts, competitions and workshops being St. Columb’s Hall.
