magheraberryprisonDerry MLA Pat Ramsey has called for an urgent review into the case of a Derry man who blinded himself by gouging his eyes in his prison cell when it is understood he was supposed to be under enhanced supervision.

The SDLP assemblyman has written to Justice Minister David Ford calling on him to investigate what he called a “shameful failure of the duty of care” of Sean Lynch whose family say he has been left permanently blind after inflicting a number of horrific injuries on himself while on remand at Maghaberry prison.

Mr Lynch (23) is currently in hospital receiving treatment for the injuries which are believed to have occurred while he was on a “special watch” at the prison.

Describing the case as “extremely distressing,” Mr Ramsey revealed he has spoken to Mr Lynch’s family.

Mr Ramsey added: “They, rightly, cannot understand how their son was able to inflict such horrific injuries on his body when he was meant to be, it is believed, under enhanced supervision.

“Something has gone badly wrong, and a thorough investigation must take place to ensure this never happens again.”

Mr Ramsey concluded: “I have written to David Ford and told him I am extremely concerned about this young man and for his family, and I have urged him to instigate an urgent case review as soon as possible.”
