Plans for multi storey and ground level car parks within the grounds of Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry have been given the go-ahead by Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan.
A £4.5 million scheme is part of the new £73 million North Wing project which will deliver six new inpatient wards and a new main entrance at the hospital.
Work on the car parks – to be built on the current outpatient car park area at the hospital – is expected to begin in the near future and is due for completion next spring.
The multi storey car park will be three storeys high and will provide 314 spaces, 293 of which will within the multi storey car park and 21 in the ground level car park.
Mark H Durkan said the development was an important project and was another example of his commitment to prioritising development proposals for community facilities and infrastructure.
He added: “The application was turned around within four months. Once again this demonstrates that my planning reform agenda is delivering real change.”
Health Minister Edwin Poots said the project was a “key part” of the Altnagelvin redevelopment programme.
He added: “It will provide much-needed parking facilities for patients and families and is an essential enabling works project in advance of the next phase of the site development, consisting of the construction of six new 24-bed wards and a new main entrance.”
Mr Poots concluded: “This is welcome news for all the communities served by the Western Trust. I expect building work to begin on the car park development imminently.”
