The Western Health and Social Care Trust has announced the most recent appointment to its “growing team” which will support the future development of the new £50+ million Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
The new appointee is Jean Simpson who will be the professional lead and senior manager for the Therapeutic Radiotherapy team who form a new group of Allied Health Professionals coming to the Western Trust.
Prior to this appointment, Jean was Deputy Radiotherapy Service Manager at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre where she worked to build and develop radiotherapy services and maintain the delivery of high quality and effective patient care for people with cancer requiring radiotherapy.
Jean is central to the development of the service for the Western Trust’s Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital and will manage the core staff responsible for delivering care to patients attending for treatment.
Speaking of her appointment, Jean said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the role of Therapeutic Radiography Manager and I am looking forward to establishing a new team of staff who will maintain close synergies with the well-established multi disciplinary teams in the Western Trust as well as developing new links with the other health care facilities referring patients for radiotherapy treatment.
Therapeutic Radiographers are a key professional group in the direct delivery of treatment and care to patients receiving radiotherapy.
“Whilst the highly specialised technical skills of radiotherapy planning and treatment delivery using a wide range of technology are at the core of our profession it is our specialist training in radiation physics, radiobiology, radiation oncology and care of the cancer patient that uniquely qualifies us to deliver integrated holistic care to patients and their families across the entire pathway from referral for radiotherapy treatment to the point of discharge and follow-up.”
Una Cardin, Radiotherapy Unit Manager said the Trust was delighted to appoint Jean as Therapeutic Radiography Manager.
She added: “We are certain that Jean will bring a wealth of clinical and management experience to this new role.
“We are delighted to welcome our very first Therapeutic Radiography Manager to this Trust who will in turn lead our first ever team of Therapeutic Radiographers in the provision of direct delivery of care to patients across the radiotherapy pathway.
“This appointment is another step in the right direction for the Radiotherapy Unit becoming a reality for the patients we serve.”
