The new £2.2 million Museum of Free Derry will be completed by January 2016, according to the chairperson of the Bloody Sunday Trust, Conal McFeely.
The Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) signed off on funding for the museum last year.
Speaking after the plans for the Bogside museum were unveiled, Mr Feely said: “We have been working towards this regeneration of the Museum of Free Derry for many years, and it is a very exciting time for us as we now enter the final stages of achieving our goal.”
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney said the funding package would allow the museum to grow and develop to meet the rising demand from international and local visitors.
He said: “The Museum of Free Derry is instrumental in telling the story of our recent history in Derry, particularly the events from the start of the civil rights era through to Bloody Sunday.
“Countless visitors from across the world have come to the current museum at Glenfada Park, the scene of a number of the murders carried out on Bloody Sunday, and have been hugely impressed by the facility.
“The Museum of Free Derry is an important facility in the city as it tells the story of the community.”
Mr McCartney concluded: “It is also a key to attracting tourists to the city, and the Bogside area in particular, and the redevelopment of the museum will help draw even more visitors.”
