A new lighting scheme, to be switched on tonight, will illuminate the riverside walkway on the west bank of the Foyle in Derry.
The Department of Social Development provided £85,000 to Derry City Council for the scheme involves the installation of 230 metres of permanent festoon lighting along the riverside walkway adjacent to the Council building and car park.
Works include a centrepiece of inter-changeable coloured LED illuminating the Civic Offices.
Mayor of Derry Cllr Brenda Stevenson welcomed the funding saying it would provide “huge value” to the regenerated Quayside walkway.
“Over the last few years, the transformation of the Quay area along the city side of the River Foyle had been truly amazing, so much so that we can now boost a beautiful riverside walkway connecting our three bridges which is enjoyed daily by thousands.
“With additional funding secured from the Social Development Department, the Queens Quay portion of the walkway is set to be transformed again with the installation of a prominent lighting scheme at the Council civic offices and surrounding section of riverside walkway.
“The visual impact of the project will be significant in that it will transform this visually prominent river frontage and compliment with other landmark features including the nearby Peace Bridge.
“The project will be a further addition to the recently completed first phase of the nearby Walled City Lighting project with another building and area being illuminated and adding to the City’s evening skyline for the enjoyment of our citizens and visitors.”
Cllr Stevenson concluded: “The city is expecting to welcome thousands of international visitors and the additional lighting will provide added ambience each evening.”
Minister McCausland said the project would create an “attractive visual backdrop” physically transforming this part of the riverside corridor.
He added: “It will create a friendly ambiance and will complement the earlier investment by my Department in upgrading the public realm along Queen’s Quay.
“The festive lighting will help revitalise this area of the walkway and make it an even more enjoyable experience for the many visitors expected to attend during the LegenDerry Maritime Festival and Clipper event.”
The contractor is on site and the project is scheduled to be completed and tested by today.
