Derry City Council will next week debate whether or not it will support a commemoration event being held to mark the 100th anniversary of break out of World War One.
Lights Out – a Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) initiated art-lead project taking place on 4 August next- is being held to create a “shared moment of reflection” to mark the hour that World War One broke out 100 years ago.
The organisers have issued an invitation to every building, every business and every community member to turn off their lights from 10.00pm until 11.00pm, leaving on a single light or candle for the “shared moment of reflection.”
The Council is being asked to support and participate in the initiative by creating “simple yet powerful ‘Lights Out’ moments and imagery for the public.”
Councillors will debate the matter at their next monthly meeting taking place this Tuesday, 24 June.
