Skipper Sean McCarter and the crew of the Derry “LondonDerry” Doire can’t wait to sail into their home port today and join in the celebrations following their historic win yesterday in race 14 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
The nine-day Legendary Maritime Festival, which has already attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the city in its first two days, is set to party when the Derry Clipper sails into the Foyle Marina at around 11.00am this morning.
One crew member who is looking forward to the homecoming more than others is local woman, Breidge Boyle, who was full of praise for her skipper.
Speaking shortly after the historic victory was confirmed yesterday, Breidge, a 52-year-old nurse, said she was looking forward to the celebrations and being reunited with her family.
She said: “I am so proud to be a part of this fabulous team and this fabulous boat.
“I am so proud of our skipper, who throughout the hard times stood firm and led us to victory.
“This team is truly LegenDerry and so is Sean.”
She concluded: “I can’t wait to arrive in the city now – mum, I can’t wait to see you.”
And the skipper also said he could not wait to join in the celebrations.
He said: “We inherited the title of LengenDerry crew, but now it’s official. I couldn’t be any prouder of how this team has performed.
“We have always said this is our race and there was no way we were going to let anyone else stand on that podium in Derry ahead of us.”
He concluded: “We’ve waited a long time for this moment and we can’t wait to celebrate it with you. See you tomorrow.”
