Derry City will make the short journey to Wales to face Aberystwyth Town in the UEFA Europa League first round qualifying round following the draw in UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, earlier today.
Peter Hutton’s side play the Welsh side over two legs on 3 and 10 July next.
The “Seasiders” finished seventh in the Welsh Premier League last season and are managed by Ian Hughes who is in his fourth season with the club,
The draw will delight City as they could have been drawn against Jelgava (Latvia), Fram Reykjavík (Iceland), B36Tórshavn (Faroe Islands), VPS Vaasa (Finland) or
Atlantas (Lithuania).
No doubt, Derry manager Peter Hutton will be looking to Gerard Doherty for some insight into the Hughes’ side, as the City goalkeeper plied his trade with Welsh side TNS from 2001 to 2007.
Located on the coast of mid Wales, Aberystwyth is a university town with a population of around 20,000 – and 50 pubs!
The club was founded in 1884 and play at Park Avenue which can accommodate 5,000 spectators, 1,000 of which are seated.
Last year, City were eliminated in the second qualifying round by Turkish side Trabzonspor, going out 7-2 on aggregate, having lost the first leg at Brandywell 3-0 and the away leg 4-2 in Trabzon.
