The third Portrush Regatta takes place this weekend with an action packed racing programme for cruisers and dinghies.
Coleraine Borough Council has teamed up with Coleraine Yacht Club and Portrush Yacht Club to showcase the challenge.
Peter Thompson, Tourism Manager, Coleraine Borough Council believes the North Coast provides huge potential as a sailing destination.
He said ‘Coleraine Yacht Club is a very active club who offer courses throughout the year and I am pleased to see that their membership is growing particularly among junior sailors aim who are so keen to apply their skills on the water.
Portrush Yacht Club is also a recognized RYA training centre and has just completed a stunning £500,000 to their facilities at Harbour Road, Portrush. Our joint object is to attract sailing enthusiasts to discover wonderful conditions in this stretch of the North Atlantic.
Saturday will see the cruisers provide the excitement as they undertake back-to-back inshore races taking in The Skerries, commencing at 11.00 hours.
The starter gun will sound at 12.00 noon on Sunday for a series of three back-to-back dinghy races which are sure to be highly competitive with entrants expected from all across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Entry fee is just £10 and entry forms can be downloaded from www.northcoastni.com.
An additional feature to this year’s programme is a RS Dinghy Association one day event on Sunday at East Bay.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Maritime Heritage Group will slow things down with a display of traditional curraghs.
Portrush has a deep maritime connection – having been a fishing village before becoming a thriving holiday resort in the last century. If you want to discover the maritime heritage of Portrush the Harbour Master, Robert Anderson has created a wonderful display of the history of Portrush Harbour and the adjacent seas in the Harbour Office – entrance is free of charge.
