Funding totalling £547,000 has been announced to refurbish one of Derry’s oldest buildings.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan and Regional Development Minister Nelson McCausland confirmed the investment to revamp the former Alpha Glass Studio in the city centre.
The building, at the corner of Magazine Street and Castle Street, adjacent to the historic City Walls in Londonderry, dates from the late 19th century and has previously been used as a glass making workshop by Alphaglass Ltd.
The company still owns the building and this funding will help them to bring it back into use with shop units on the ground floor and apartments above.
Baldies Barbers, who have temporarily relocated to facilitate the works, will once again operate their successful business from this building once the works are completed.
Announcing the funding Minister McCausland said his department would provide £146,685 of Urban Development Grant funding for the refurbishment.
Mr Durkan said the announcement was a “significant boost” for Derry’s Built Heritage.
He added: “The ongoing work being carried out to renovate the Coyle Building will both promote commercial and residential opportunities within the city centre.
“Crucially, the renovation will ensure the ongoing use of this significant building, which is located within the Historic City Conservation Area.”
