Roads Service has been called make road safety measures a priority on the Culmore Point Road of Derry which, it is claimed, is being used as a “rally circuit.”
The call comes from SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins who said she “particularly worried” about the safety of children in the area.
Cllr Dobbins said she welcomed proposed road safety measures to be implemented in the Ardan Road area but called for priority to be given to Culmore Point Road and Elmvale, which she claimed was used by motorists to avoid “heavy traffic” on the main Culmore Road.
Cllr Dobbins said the Ardan road safety were “a start” but were “still not enough.”
She added: “I am relieved that calming measures such as signs with flashing lights and associated markings are to be installed at Thornhill College and ‘soft’ humps on the Ardan Rd near Hollybush School.
“These measures will address long existing concerns regarding safety for students and staff at both schools, but, what about other areas such as Culmore Point Road which is regularly used as a rally circuit at weekends or Elmvale, which is commonly used as a thoroughfare to avoid heavy traffic on the main Culmore Road.
“Traffic issues in these areas have been highlighted for years. I am particularly worried that we are close to school holidays and children will be playing around these associated roads.”
Cllr Dobbins concluded: “Once again I call on Road Service to heed these concerns and give them the priority they deserve.”
