The Beach Boys surfed into Derry earlier tonight to thrill over 5,000 fans at an open air concert at Ebrington Square.
Young and old – mostly old – donned beach gear and Hawaiin shirts to join in the fun-filled event staged in conjunction with the Legenderry Maritime Festival organised by Derry City Council to welcome the crews from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race to the city.
Unfortunately, the band from the land of sunshine did not bring the weather with them – but the drizzle that fell throughout the show did not deter the fun as the band blasted out hit after hit such as God Only Knows, Cottonfields, Surfin’ USA, Good Vibrations and I Get Around.
One fan in particular who was delighted more than most to see the band perform was US native Mary O’Carolan.
Mary first saw the Beach Boys perform in Michigan when she was just 15 years old.
Now in her 50s and married and living in Derry with husband Daragh O’Carolan, Mary was seeing the Beach Boys for the first time since way back then.
She said: “It has been a long time but one worth waiting on. I have wanted to see the Beach Boys again so much. Their music is absolutely brilliant.”
