Thousands are expected in Derry this weekend to attend a commemoration being held to remember the city’s deceased republicans.
The annual “Volunteers Commemoration” march will Central Drive in Creggan at 2.30pm on Sunday for a wreath-laying ceremony in the City Cemetery.
Main speaker at this year’s event will be one of Sinn Fein’s four newly elected members to the European Parliament, Lynn Boylan, who topped the poll in last month’s election in Dublin with over 83,000 votes.
Sunday’s commemoration is one of a number of events being organised by the Derry Republican Graves Association in the city this weekend.
Names will be added to the Republican Book of Remembrance in Sinn Fein’s offices at Rath Mor at 3.00pm on Saturday while the Graves Association’s annual draw will be held the Gasyard Centre at 7,00pm on Sunday.
Sinn Fein Cllr Colly Kelly said Sunday’s commemoration was a “very important date” for Derry and Donegal republicans.
He added: “The main Volunteers Commemoration is held each year to remember all those local people who died as a result of the conflict.”
