While it may almost be time to put the school books away for the long-waited summer holidays, schoolboys in Derry who play Gaelic Football have one more big date to pencil in before that happens.
A unique challenge game between the schools in the city and their counterparts Inishowen has been arranged as part of the 10 years celebration of coaching in the primary schools in the Donegal peninsula.
The game, which should be a memorable occasion for the young boys involved, will take place Celtic Park in Derry on Wednesday evening next, 2 July, with a throw in time of 7.00pm.
It is also hoped a girls’ game can be arranged at a later date.
Neil Forester, Games Development Officer with the Derry County Board, and Paul Simpson, were delighted to accept the challenge to bring to an end their year-long school programme in the city’s schools.
They will select a panel from schools in the Derry City Council area and play under the name of City Oaks, which is their equivalent of a GAA Academy before moving on to County Development squads.
A similar game did take place some years ago between Inishowen and a Derry Select as a curtain raiser to the under-16 Buncrana Cup final, which was won Inishowen by the Donegal side.
