Pupils from a Derry school have received rave reviews for their performance at the heats of the National Choir of the Year 2014 competition held in City Halls, Glasgow.
St Mary’s College choir, under the direction of Emma-Jayne Kelly and accompanied by Jonathan Hutton, performed the moving “In Paradisium” by Faure, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and a dynamic and rousing interpretation of Michael McGlynn’s “Dulaman.”
The judges, Edward Caswell and James Grossmith, were particularly impressed by the girls’ effortless unison singing in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” describing it as “the best unison singing they heard all day.”
They described their energetic rendition of “Dulaman” as “virtuosic excellence.”
The girls were named “Choir of the Day” and have been put through to the National Selection stage.
They are now waiting to hear if they will be one of the four youth choirs selected to perform in the category finals at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 19 October next, when four category winners will progress to the grand final in December, which be broadcast on BBC television and radio.
