A shadow has been cast over this afternoon’s departure from Lough Foyle of the fleet in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race following the tragic death of an Inishowen fisherman.
The body of Danny McDaid (56), a father of two daughters from Glengad, was recovered from the waters off Kinnego Bay yesterday morning following the sinking of his boat.
Greencastle Coast Guard, the RNLI crews from both Lough Swilly and Portrush and the Sligo 118 helicopter all responded to the emergency.
The tragedy has stunned the close-knit community of Inishowen as well as the fishing village of Greencastle from where the 12-strong fleet will set sail at 2.45pm at the start of race 15 to Den Helder in Holland.
The yachts will leave Foyle Marina in Derry at 11.00am and are expected to arrive in Greencastle at around 2.00pm ahead of an aerial display by the famous Red Arrows.
A traffic management plan will be in operation in Greencastle with “park and ride” facilities available for spectators.
There will also be vantage points from Downhill to Benone Strand at Magilligan (parking is permitted on Benone beach but motorists are urged to exercise care as it is expected to be very busy).
The fleet’s departure is taking place on the ninth and final day of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival which attracted tens of thousands to Derry’s quayside.
