The annual “Volunteers Commemoration” remembering Derry’s republican dead will take place in the city this afternoon.
A parade, headed by women dressed in white shirts and black ties to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of Cumann na mBan, will leave Central Drive in Creggan at 2.30pm and make its way to the republican plot in the City Cemetery.
Main speaker at this year’s event will be one of Sinn Fein’s four newly elected members to the European Parliament, Lynn Boylan, who topped the poll in last month’s election in Dublin with over 83,000 votes.
Today’s commemoration is one of a number of events being organised by the Derry Republican Graves Association in the city this weekend.
Names were added to the Republican Book of Remembrance in Sinn Fein’s offices at Rath Mor yesterday while the Graves Association’s annual draw will be held the Gasyard Centre at 7,00pm tonight.
