The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire is “holding its own” on day one of the 15th leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, according to skipper Sean McCarter.
The Derry Clipper was one of the 12-strong crew that sail from Greencastle yesterday afternoon in what Sean revealed were difficult conditions caused by a strong tide.
He added: “We had a good start and were all sad to see the Foyle fading over the horizon.
“We are currently holding our own among the lead pack in very unstable breeze but we can’t complain as it’s a lot better than what was forecast.”
Meanwhile, Sean revealed the crew of the Derry Clipper were overwhelmed by the welcome they received during their stopover in Derry.
He said: “Wow! What a week! From hours before we arrived into the Foyle until sailing out of Greencastle yesterday the support was the best we’ve seen by far!
“I know I may be slightly biased and to some degree my crew yet they agree unanimously that Derry ‘LondonDerry’ was the top stopover of the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race.
“Thanks to all the Lough Swilly Yacht Club, Greencastle Yacht Club, Irish Cruising club, Culmore sailing club and other boats who made our arrival and departure so special. Derry-Londonderry was the first stopover that had boats to greet us like this.”
