The first announcement was made today by the £900,000 Legacy Fund for Derry, which will bring a series of outstanding arts projects to life across the city.
The new fund, set-up by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Derry City Council, will bring three years of arts and heritage projects to the city.
The first 23 projects supported through the initiative cover a range of cultural offerings across dance, visual arts, music and theatre genres.
They include Lullaby which will work with artist Luke Jerram and the people of the city to build on Lumiere 2013 to stage a light show on wheels with music, light and movement.
Also taking place will be a Fashion and Textile Legacy Programme, a new initiative to support creative individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses in the fashion and textile design sectors in the city.
The core component of the programme is a Fashion and Textile Hub in Shipquay Street featuring four dedicated rooms including The Stitchery, Design Room and Creative Lounge, Self-contained Designer Work Studios and Creative Meeting and event Space.
In addition to the Hub the core elements of the programme include, networking opportunities, competitions, workshops, events, Hot House programme and an end of project finale.
Each of the successful arts organisations will now work to develop their projects and create major new arts experiences and events for Derry.
Roísín McDonough, chief executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said Legacy Fund announcement would ensure the “important investment” in the arts and culture sector of “this creative, vibrant city continues, building on Derry’s amazing year as City of Culture 2013.”
Mayor of Derry, Cllr Brenda Stevenson said the fund demonstrated the “excellent partnership” between the Arts Council and the city.
She added: “I am delighted that the first tranche of projects have now been assessed and there are twenty four projects which will contribute strongly to the exciting and vibrant arts and cultural sector in our city.”
Around £610,000 has now been awarded through the Legacy Fund to support the first collection of successful projects.
Details of when the fund will reopen for applications will be announced later this year.
