Five local advice providers in the Derry City Council area have been awarded £570,000 in funding from Derry City Council and the Department for Social Development (North West Development Office).
The funding will allow the centres – Citizens Advice Bureau, Dove House Community Trust, The Resource Centre Derry, Northwest Advice Services (GIAS), and Rosemount & District Welfare Rights – to provide free advice.
Welcoming the funding provision, the Mayor of Derrym Cllr Brenda Stevenson, said it was “good news” for the community sector and “good use” of public funds.
She added: “The demand for advice services has grown substantially both in quantity and complexity, resulting in client enquiries becoming more complex and time consuming.
“Derry City Council acknowledged this and developed a sophisticated and effective process for assessing the funding levels to advice providers in the area to ensure a high quality and efficient service delivery.”
Noel Munnis, Head of Leisure, Culture and Community Service, they were delighted to be making “substantial resources” available to the five centres.
