The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire remains in contention for a first place finish as the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race fleet closes in on Den Helder in the Netherlands.
The first boats, which set out off Greencastle on Sunday last at their six-day stopover in Derry, are expected to arrive at the dock around 8.00am local time tomorrow.
Henri Lloyd is still leading the fleet, which is currently running in winds of 20 knots off the north east of England, and if it goes on to win DLL Cup from Derry to Den Helder, it will have a potentially unbeatable advantage in the Clipper 2013-14 Race.
However, with six miles separating the leading boats, Sean McCarter, skipper of the Derry Clipper, is not giving up on winning back-to-back races.
He said: “We are struggling a little with our steering; it feels like we are towing an oil rig on each rudder!
“We’ll keep pushing on and with only a few miles separating the first seven or eight boats, it should be an exciting 24 hours in to the finish.”
