Moves to abolish mobile phone roaming charges across the European Union have been welcomed by Martina Anderson, Sinn Fein MEP in the North.
Ms Anderson said as a result of the passing of “landmark new rules” people could look forward to roaming charges being abolished across the EU from next year.
She added: “This development will be welcomed by tourists and business people alike as they will no longer have to worry about incurring extortionate additional charges while travelling anywhere in the EU.
“In spite of a strong lobbying effort from large telecom companies, the European Parliament chose to protect consumers’ access to high quality internet and mobile services at reasonable cost rather than service rProviders increased profits.”
Ms Anderson concluded: “I will continue to keep a close eye on the activities of service providers to ensure attempts to recoup any revenue by other means or increased charges does not go unnoticed.”
