The Western Health Trust’s pharmacy team is celebrating success after being crowned winner at this year’s prestigious National Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Pharmaceutical Care Awards for their project designed to improve the care provision for older people.
The annual awards, held recently in London, are aimed at recognising innovative practice and service developments that have been shown to improve the health of patients through better use of medicines.
The Western Trust winning team consisted of Carmel Darcy, Consultant Pharmacist (Older People), Dr Ruth Miller, Lead Pharmacist, Research and Clinical Trials and Anne Friel, Head of Pharmacy and Medicines Management.
The project chosen by the panel of judges evaluated the impact of providing pharmaceutical care to older people in an intermediate healthcare setting at Waterside Hospital in Derry.
The team were shortlisted out of 31 entries and were hotly contested by six inspiring finalists.
Speaking of behalf of the team, Project Manager Dr Miller said they were “thrilled” to win the award.
She added: “We had a vision for our case management project which meets the pharmaceutical care needs of a growing older population.
“It provides a model and direction of travel for the pharmacy profession producing definite outcomes and improving quality of life for not just our older patients but those with long term conditions.”
