The people of Derry are being asked this weekend to help the growing number in the city going without sufficient food.
Derry Food Bank Project Appeal, set up in 2012 to help the rising number of people in the city living in hardship, is organising a food collection to “help us in addressing the need for food in our city.”
The group was formed following a pilot scheme operated by St Eugene’s parish and the Church of Ireland parish group of Christ Church, Culmore, Muff and St Peter’s (CCCMP).
Donations of food can be left at St Eugene’s Cathedral this weekend.
A cathedral spokesperson said: “There are many people within our local community who go without sufficient food and we as a parish community have been asked to help.
“A group of people working throughout our city are trying to address this need.
“What they are asking from you is your help – can you donate some imperishable food items? If so bring them along to the Cathedral door for collection.”
The spokesperson said stocks of the following items were “urgently currently required” – tinned fruit, tinned dessert, tinned fish, tinned meats, tinned pies, biscuits, toilet rolls, jams, long life milk, rice/pasta, pasta sauces, tinned tomatoes, tea bags, cuppa soup, cereal, super/pot noodles, coffee and instant mash potato.
