Local nature lovers are being urged to support a special scheme geared towards protecting local birds and wildlife.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)s pinbadge scheme has already raised more than £1million for wildlife conservation projects, and last year alone around £18,000 was raised across Northern Ireland through the sale of the badges, which only cost £1.
There are now almost 200 different badges in circulation, from garden birds to exotic mammals and wild flowers.
According to Mayor of Derry, Cllr Brenda Stevenson, the charity relies on public support through donations and the work of its volunteers.
“The RSPB do some invaluable work protecting our local wildlife and I would urge the public to support their work,” she said.
“I have arranged for a pinbadge box to be placed in the reception area in the Guildhall for anyone who wishes to contribute to the scheme.”
“The group works closely with schools and community organisations to educate young people about wildlife and conservation in their area, and I would encourage local teachers and group leaders to find out more about their educational programmes.”
Kirsty McReynolds-Lunn, of the RSPB, said: “We were delighted that Mayor Stevenson has endorsed the work we’re doing and the scheme is a great way to help with the preservation of the local environment.
“The charity is also always on the lookout for more enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to look after pinbadge boxes in their areas and attend events.”
