A wonder goal from Derry City midfielder Patrick McEleney earned Derry City a hard-fought away victory over Athlone Town in the Airtricity Premier Division this afternoon.
McEleney, affectionately known as “Fats,” fired in a stunning free kick from over 30 yards on 20 minutes to secure City’s third win in five games in all competitions.
Not for the first time this season, keeper Gerard Dohery, came to City’s rescue – this time touching a Philip Gorman header from three yards onto the crossbar to maintain the visitors narrow lead into the half-time break.
The home side dominated the second half but could not break down a stubborn Derry defence which saw Aaron Barry clear off the line with just five minutes remaining.
