Cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support Northern Ireland has paid tribute to former Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, after picking up a cheque for £19,000, following a year of fundraising support as his chosen charity during his year as the city’s first citizen.
Cllr Reilly and his wife Bronagh staged a number of fundraising events and charity collections throughout the year, with all proceeds going directly to Macmillan.
The money raised will be used to support and extend charity’s advice services based at Altnagelvin Hospital.
Speaking after handing over the cheque, Cllr Reilly said he was delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause.
He said: “I think everyone is aware of the valuable role filled by Macmillan in our community, where they provide essential assistance for those learning to live with cancer as well as a network of support for loved ones.
“Cancer is a terrible disease which affects one in three people, and I am delighted to be able to contribute any amount which will assist them in the delivery of their services.
“I enjoyed a fantastic year in office and many of the highlight events during my time as Mayor meant even more as they provided the opportunity to fundraise for this worthy cause, including the Mayor’s Ball and our fantastic Family Fun Day in the Guildhall.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Mayor’s charity throughout the year, and I hope everyone will continue to support Macmillan at the many fundraising events organised locally by the charity.”
Maria Small, of Macmillan Cancer Support NI, Maria Small paid tribute to Cllr Reilly.
She said: “This is a truly amazing total and is a great testament to the sheer volume of work, support and time that Martin spent working with Macmillan in the city. I would also like to thank Martin’s wife Bronagh and all his colleagues, friends and family who supported him at many events throughout the year.
“It was a real privilege to work alongside the mayor and all at Derry City Council for the past year and we are so grateful for all the time and effort invested in making our partnership such a great success.”
