Senior Derry Sinn Fein representative Martina Anderson has described the placing of one of her election posters on a loyalist bonfire as a “hate crime.”
Ms Anderson, who topped the poll in the North in May’s European Parliament election, said the placing of the poster – along with one of Alliance MLA Anna Lo – on a bonfire in Bangor, Co Down, was “an insult” to the 160,000 people who had voted for her.
Ms Lo said she was “deeply personally offended” by the poster being placed on the bonfire.
Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt has called for the posters to be removed.
He said: “It is perfectly possible to celebrate one’s cultural identity without having to resort to burning election posters or seeking to offend anyone else.”
Mr Nesbitt added: “I have previously called for actions to be lawful and peaceful, but it is equally important to stress that they must also be respectful.”
